The Seventh Annual DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGE provided a unique opportunity for Developing Leaders to earn industry wide recognition and cash prizes, showcase their skills before high profile industry leaders, plus network within the community. Developing Leaders (DLs) from all segments of the industry and Toronto-area university students registered teams and were given a real estate development case with specific parameters. The teams were required to submit sophisticated proposals by a set date during the summer.
For this year’s edition of the competition, the Development Challenge organizing committee selected a theme: Re-develop! Renovate and Reposition! The committee selected a site, The Dundas-Edward Centre. DLs within the Greater Toronto real estate industry and post-graduate students in real estate related programs were asked to make their mark in Downtown Toronto. They were asked to put on their private equity hats and plan the future for this 1.1 acre full city block between Dundas and Edward streets.
Awards Night, held October 4, 2018 featured live presentations by three finalist teams. Congratulations to the Development Challenge First Place team!

NAIOP Greater Toronto’s STUDENT CONNECTIONS program gives university students networking and learning opportunities similar to the career-enhancing opportunities that NAIOP Developing Leaders enjoy through the chapter’s popular annual Mentorship Program.
From November 2018 to February 2019, more than 60 participating university students from Greater Toronto and the surrounding area and 36 Developing Leader members of NAIOP will connect in hour-long, one-on-one mentoring sessions. The Developing Leaders welcome this opportunity to help students who are pursuing careers in commercial real estate, and the students can benefit greatly from the knowledge and insights offered by their DL mentors.
